Prolactin levels under normal physiological conditions

Normal levels of prolactin in healthy human blood: normal non-pregnant women and healthy men are as follows:

  • In normal, non-pregnant, healthy adult women, the level of prolactin in the blood is 127-637 µU / mL, in pregnant women it is 200-4500 µU / mL, and in menopausal women 30-430 µU / mL; in normal men, it is 98-456 µU / mL.
  • Blood prolactin levels change markedly during a day, gradually increasing during sleep, and peaks in the morning. Prolactin in the blood has a biological half-life of only about 20-30 minutes. So, the best time to have a blood drawn for a prolactin test is about 3-4 hours after waking up.
  • The level of prolactin in the blood can also rise in a number of normal physiological conditions such as: after a meaty meal, after intercourse, nipple stimulation, after exercise, or under stress.
  • In pregnant and lactating women, the level of prolactin in the blood physiologically increases.

How to maintain a stable concentration of Prolactin

  • Prolactin levels affect the levels of sex hormones - estrogen in women and testosterone in men. The effects of high Prolactin levels in women can decrease estrogen levels, reducing libido. High prolactin also prolongs recovery time after sex.
  • In fact, high Prolactin causes the neurotransmitter Dopamine to be reduced, the signals cannot be transmitted to other neurons, which directly affects mood in the negative direction. In contrast, Dopamine is a Prolactin inhibitor. In addition, high prolactin may impair your fertility.
  • However, there are medications that help lower levels of prolactin like Cabergoline and bromocriptene, but it's rife with side effects like nausea, constipation, dry mouth, and heart palpitations. If you do intend to use the drug, consult your doctor.
