What is Eliquis?
The drug Eliquis (apixaban) blocks the action of certain blood clotting substances in the blood. Medications are used to reduce the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot in people with a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation.
It is also used after hip or knee replacement surgery to stop a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis ( DVT ), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
It is also used to treat DVT or pulmonary embolism (PE), and to reduce the risk of repeating DVT or PE.
Important safety information before using the drug
Do not take if your heart valve is artificial, or if you bleed from surgery or trauma.
Very serious blood clotting drugs around the spinal cord if you undergo spinal anesthesia.
Get emergency medical help if you have symptoms of a spinal blood clot such as back pain, numbness or muscle weakness in your lower body, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
Kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
Liver failure;
If you are over 80 years old;
If you weigh less than 132 pounds.
Some of the reasons that cause you to have blood clots, cause long-term paralysis:
You have a history of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps;
You have recently had spinal or epidural anesthesia;
You are taking an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) - ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam;
You are using other medicines to treat or prevent blood clots.
Taking this medicine during pregnancy may increase your risk of bleeding while you are pregnant or during your birth. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Drug dosage
This medication is usually taken twice daily. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may sometimes change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
How to use medicine
You can take it with or without food.
Do not swallow the tablet whole, crush it and mix it with water. It may also be given through a nasal tube (NG).
Do not stop using the drug on your own, abruptly stopping the drug can increase your risk of blood clots or stroke.
Side effects of the drug Eliquis
Call your doctor at once if you have:
Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), bleeding from the wound or needle injection, any bleeding will not stop;
