What is Avastin? What disease is Bevacizumab indicated for?

  • The drug Avastin (Bevacizumab) is used with chemotherapy to treat cancer of the colon (large intestine) or rectum that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Bevacizumab is also used with chemotherapy to treat certain types of lung cancer.
  • The drug Avastin (Bevacizumab) is also used to treat spongioblastoma (a type of brain tumor) that has already been treated with other drugs.

Important Information Medication Avastin 400mg

Avastin can make it easier for you to bleed. Contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention if you have any bleeding that will not stop. You may also have bleeding inside the body , such as in your stomach or intestines, or in your brain.

Call your doctor at once if you have: signs of bleeding in your gastrointestinal tract - feeling very weak or dizzy stomach pain, severe stomach pain, black or bloody stools, or if you cough up blood or vomit coffee varieties; or signs of bleeding in the brain - sudden sudden or weakening of weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, or problems with vision or balance.

Note before taking Avastin 400mg

You should not use Avastin if you are allergic to bevacizumab, or:

  • if you have healed a skin wound or surgical incision;
  • if you have had surgery within the past 4 weeks (28 days);
  • if you have recently coughed up blood; or
  • if you plan on having surgery within the next 4 weeks (28 days).

To make sure Avastin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you:

  • heart disease, high blood pressure;
  • a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot;
  • bleeding or blood clotting disorder; or
  • a history of stomach or intestinal bleeding, or perforation (pit or hole) in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines.

It is not known whether Avastin will harm an unborn baby. In animal studies, Bevacizumab caused birth defects. However, it is not known whether these effects occur in humans. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine and for at least 6 months after your treatment ends.

How is Avastin given?

Prepare for the infusion of Avastin

Use the appropriate aseptic technique. Parenteral products should be visually inspected for particulate matter and discoloration prior to use, whenever the solution and solvent allows. Withdraw the required amount of Avastin and dilute to a total volume of 100 mL 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP. Discard any unused portion remaining in the jar, as the product does not contain preservatives.

What should I avoid while taking Avastin

Avoid activities that increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use care to avoid bleeding while shaving or brushing teeth.

Side effects of Avastin

Ask for emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Avastin : hives; shortness of breath; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Avastin can make it easier for you to bleed. Call your doctor or seek urgent medical attention if you:

  • easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, rectum) or any bleeding that won't stop;
  • signs of bleeding in your digestive tract - severe stomach pain, bloody or delayed stools, coughing up blood or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds; or
  • signs of bleeding in the brain - sudden suddenness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden headache, problems with vision or balance.

Avastin can cause a rare but serious neurological disorder that affects the brain. Symptoms may occur within hours of your first dose, or they may not appear within a year after treatment has started. Call your doctor at once if you have weakness or fatigue, headache, confusion, problems with vision, fainting or seizures (power loss or convulsions).

Some people receiving Avastin have developed a fistula (abnormal pathway) in the throat, lungs, gallbladder, kidneys, bladder, or vagina. Call your doctor if you have: chest pain and difficulty breathing, stomach pain or swelling, urine flow, or if you feel suffocated while eating or drinking.

Also call your doctor if you are

  • fever, chills, vomiting and constipation;
  • swollen gums, burning pain, pain when swallowing, skin ulcers, cold or flu symptoms, cough;
  • pain, swelling, heat, or redness in one or both legs;
  • chest pain or severe feeling, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating, feeling sick;
  • missed menstrual periods;
  • signs of any skin infection - sudden red, red, hot, swollen, or oozing, or any skin wound or surgical incision will not heal; or
  • dangerously high blood pressure - severe headache, blurred vision, neck pain, earache, nosebleeds, anxiety, confusion, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat.

Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medication.

Common Avastin side effects may include

  • nosebleeds, rectal bleeding;
  • hypertension;
