What is Giotrif medicine?

Giotrif 40mg is a medicine used to treat a type of lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer. It is used especially in adults with advanced cancer in the following situations:

  • when the cancer has a gene mutation for a protein called EGFR and has not previously been treated with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
  • when the cancer belongs to the squamous cell type (from the cells of the pleura) and has worsened despite chemotherapy based on platinum.

The drug contains active ingredient Afatinib , active ingredient Afatinib belongs to the group of tyrosine kinase inhibitors used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); There is some new evidence that the drug works against some other types of cancer, such as breast cancer.

Indications for drug treatment

Giotrif monotherapy is indicated for the treatment of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer; or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) metastasis in an adult patient who has not previously been treated with the EGFR inhibitor Tyrosine Kinase.

Contraindications to the use of drugs

  • Severe liver failure or kidney failure, dialysis.
  • Pregnant women, ensure contraception in women and continue for 1 month after treatment and lactation.

  • Use exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.
  • The recommended dose for the treatment of advanced non-small cell (metastatic) lung cancer (NSCLC) is 40 mg orally once daily.
  • The recommended dose for the treatment of advanced (metastatic) psoriasis NSCLC even though platinum-based chemotherapy is 40 mg once daily.
  • Your healthcare provider may reduce the dose for severe kidney failure, diarrhea, or skin reaction.

How to use medicine?

  • Take the medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to take it.
  • Your doctor will tell you how much Giotrif to take and when to take it. Do not change your dose or stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Drink on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If within 12 hours of your next dose, skip the dose and take the next dose only at the regular time.
  • Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

Before taking Giotrif, you should pay attention to the following:

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to the drug or any of its ingredients. Check with your pharmacist for a list of ingredients.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, herbs, or supplements, especially:

  • Amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone);
  • Some antifungals such as itraconazole (Sporanox) and ketoconazole (Nizoral);
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimune);
  • Erythromycin (EES, Erythrocin, ...);
  • HIV medications such as nelfinavir (Viracept), ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra), and saquinavir (Invirase);
  • Some anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin);
  • Quinidine (in Nuedexta);
  • Rifampin (Rimactane, Rifadin, in Rifater);
  • Tacrolimus (Prograf);
  • Verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan).

There are many drugs that can interact with Giotrif that are not on the list, so make a list of all the drugs you are using with your doctor, even those not on the list above. Your doctor may change your dose of medication or monitor carefully for signs of side effects.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Do not breast-feed during treatment. Do not start pregnancy while on medication, wait at least two weeks after treatment. Consult your doctor about suitable contraception. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, tell your doctor. The drug can harm an unborn baby.

  • Nosebleed
  • Cystitis (bladder infection)
  • Inflammation of the lips (cheilitis)
  • Fever
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium)
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Rhinitis (runny nose)
  • High liver enzymes
