What is Xeltabine?
- Xeltabine is a cancer medicine that interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their spread in the body.
- It is used to treat colon cancer and breast or colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
- Xeltabine is often used in combination with other cancer drugs or radiation treatments.
- Medication may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Things to note before using Xeltabin
Do not use Xeltabin in the following cases:
- Are allergic to Capecitabine or any ingredients in the medicine. If you experience any allergies while taking Xeltabin, notify your doctor immediately.
- Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding
- Have blood problems: such as leukopenia and thrombocytopenia
- Have liver or kidney disease
- Have an enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency
- Are being treated with drugs in the same class that are part of your treatment for brivudine, sorivudine or herpes zoster (chickenpox or shingles), or you have been seen for the past four weeks.
Before using Xeltabin in any of the following situations:
- If you have liver or kidney disease
- If you have another illness, such as heart disease or chest pain, or if you have brain disease (for example, cancer or nerves spread to the brain)
- If you have a calcium imbalance (detected in blood tests) Diabetes (diabetes)
- If you have diarrhea, vomiting, or if you have diarrhea
- If an imbalance is detected in ions in your blood
- If you have had problems with your eyes in the past, you may need to follow your eyes too much during treatment.
Make sure your doctor knows about it. Consult your doctor if these prompts apply to you at any time in the past.
Pregnant

Who should not take Xeltabine?
You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to Xeltabine or fluorouracil (Adrucil) or if you have:
- Severe kidney disease
- A metabolic disorder called dpd (dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase) deficiency.
For your safety, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:
- Kidney disease
- Bleeding or a blood clotting disorder such as hemorrhage
- Liver failure
- History of coronary artery disease
- If you take a blood thinner (warfarin, coumadin, jantoven).
Do not use if you are pregnant
- It can harm an unborn baby.
- Use birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are taking Xeltabine, whether you are male or female. Tell your doctor if a pregnancy occurs during treatment.
It is not known whether Xeltabine passes into breast milk or whether it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are taking the medicine.
What is the dose of Xeltabine?
For adults:
- Breast cancer single dose: Use 1250 mg / m2 x 2 times / day (morning & evening) for 2 weeks, then take 1 week off for 3 weeks cycle
- Combined dose with Docetaxel for breast cancer: 1250mg / m2 orally twice a day (morning and evening; equivalent to a total dose of 2500 mg / m2 daily) for 2 weeks, then rest 1. Coordinate treatment with with docetaxel 75mg / m2 as IV infusion over 1 hour every 3 weeks.
- Treatment dose for colorectal cancer: The recommended dose is 1000 mg / m2 x 2 times / day for 2 weeks. Then take 1 week off, Oxaliplatin 130 mg / m2 combination intravenously within 2 hours on the first day every 3 weeks. Take the course for 24 weeks. Patients should prepare antiemetics before taking Oxaliplatin.
- Suggested dose of Xeltabine for stomach cancer: Use 1000 mg / m2 x 2 times / day for 14 days. Then 7 days off the drug, Cisplatin 80 mg / m2 combination intravenously for 2 hours every 3 weeks. Patients should be prepared with water and antiemetics before taking Cisplatin
For children:
- Currently the dose for children under 18 years old has not been studied and determined. So if you want to use it for children, you need to discuss carefully with your doctor, consider the risks and risks before applying.
How should i take Xeltabine?
- Xeltabine is usually taken twice daily. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
- The drug is taken over a 3-week treatment cycle and you only need to take it for the first 2 weeks of each cycle. Your doctor will determine how long to treat you with the drug.
- Xeltabine is just one part of the treatment program that may also include other drugs used in different schedules. Follow your doctor's medication instructions very carefully.
- The drug should be taken with food or within 30 minutes after eating a meal.
- Drink with a full glass of water.
- Call your doctor if you experience vomiting or diarrhea, if you are unable to eat because of stomach illness, or if you are sweating more than usual. Prolonged illness can lead to dehydration or kidney failure.
- You may need frequent medical tests to be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects.
- You must stay under the care of your doctor while you are taking Xeltabine.
Side effects of Xeltabine
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; shortness of breath; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- Fever over 100.5 degrees;
- Nausea, loss of appetite, eating less than usual, vomiting (more than once in 24 hours);
- Severe diarrhea (more than 4 times per day, or at night);
- Blistering or ulcers in the mouth, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing;
- Pain, pain, redness, swelling, blistering, or peeling skin in your hands or feet;
- Symptoms of dehydration - feeling very thirsty or hot, unable to urinate, sweating a lot, or hot and dry skin;
- Heart problems - chest pain or pressure, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing (even with mild exertion), swelling or rapid weight gain;
- Kidney problems - little or no urinating; painful or difficult urination; swelling in your feet or ankles; feeling tired or having trouble breathing;
- Liver problems - nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- Low blood cell count - fever or other flu symptoms, cough, skin sores, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, feeling light-headed, fast heart rate; or
- Severe skin reaction - fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes swelling blistering and peeling.
Common side effects may include:
- Stomach pain or discomfort, constipation;
- Feeling tired;
- Mild skin rash; or
- Numbness or tingling in your arms or legs.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
What other drugs will affect Xeltabine?
- If you take blood thinners (warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven), you may need to check your “INR” or prothrombin time more often. Taking a blood thinner may increase your risk of serious bleeding while you are using Xeltabine and for a short time after you stop taking it. This risk is higher in adults over 60 years of age.
- Other drugs may interact with Xeltabine, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
Can Xeltabine be taken or consumed during pregnancy?
