What is Valcyte 450mg? Indications & uses
Valcyte belongs to a group of medicinal drugs, which work directly to stop the growth of the virus. In the body the active ingredient in tablets, valganciclovir, is renamed ganciclovir.
Ganciclovir prevents a virus called cytomegalovirus (CMV) from multiplying and invading healthy cells. In patients with a weakened immune system, CMV can cause an infection in the internal organs. This can be life-threatening.
The drug Valcyte is used
for the treatment of CMV-infection of the retina of the eye in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). CMV-infection of the retina of the eye can cause vision problems and even blindness.
to prevent CMV-infection in adults and children who are not infected with CMV and who have received an organ transplant from someone who has been infected by CMV.
Start taking this medicine within 10 days after organ transplant.
The usual dose is 2 capsules / day. Drink again within 100 days after organ transplant. If you have received a kidney transplant, your doctor will give it to you for up to 200 days.
Treatment of CMV active retinitis in AIDS patients
Usual dose: 2 tablets / day for 21 days (three weeks). Do not take it for more than 21 days unless directed by your doctor, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Long-term treatment to prevent recurrence of active inflammation in the prevention of AIDS
Patients with CMV retinitis
Usual dose: 2 capsules / day. Take the medicine at the same time every day. Your doctor will advise you how long you should continue taking Valcyte. If your retinitis worsens while you are on this dose, your doctor may tell you to repeat induction treatment (as above) or may decide to give you a different medication to treat treatment of CMV infections.
Older patients
The drug has not been studied in the elderly and in patients.
Patients with kidney problems
If your kidneys are not working properly, your doctor may teach you to take less pills per day or just to take your tablets on a number of days per week. It is very important that you only take the number of medications prescribed by your doctor.
Patients with liver problems
The drug Valcyte has not been studied in patients with liver problems.
Use in children and adolescents
Prevention of CMV disease in child transplant patients should start taking this drug within 10 days of their transplant. Certain doses will vary according to the size of the child and should be taken once a day. Your doctor will decide the most appropriate dose based on your child's height, weight and kidney function. You should continue with this dose for up to 100 days. If your child has received a kidney transplant, your doctor may advise you to take the dosage for 200 days.
What should I do if I forget to take Valcyte?
If you forget to take the medicine then wait until the next dose, do not take the double dose.
Do not stop taking Valcyte without your doctor's instructions.
Overdose
If you take more Valcyte pills than you should contact your doctor or hospital immediately if you have taken, or think you have taken, more pills than you need. Taking too much medicine can cause serious side effects, especially affecting your blood or kidneys.
You may need hospital treatment.
How to take the drug Valganciclovir
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you to. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
You should swallow the pill whole with food whenever possible. Do not break or crush the pill.
If you accidentally touch the damaged tablet, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If any powder from the pill gets in your eyes, rinse your eyes with sterile water or clean water if you don't have sterile water.
For children who cannot swallow
Valcyte film-coated tablets, powder for oral solution can be used.

Note before taking Valcyte
Do not take Valcyte if:
If you are allergic to valganciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
If you are allergic to ganciclovir, acyclovir, or valaciclovir, it is a medicine used to treat another viral infection.
If you are breastfeeding.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Valcyte.
Take special care when taking Valcyte
If you have low white blood cell counts, red blood cells or platelets (small cells that are involved in blood clotting) in your blood.
Your doctor will perform blood tests before you start taking the medicine and more tests will be done while you are taking the medicine.
If you are experiencing radiation therapy or hemodialysis
If you have a problem with your kidneys.
Your doctor may need to prescribe a reduced dose for you and may need to have frequent blood tests during treatment.
If you are taking ganciclovir tablets and your doctor wants you to switch to Valcyte tablets. It is important that you do not take more than the number of tablets prescribed by your doctor or that you could risk an overdose.
Pregnancy, lactation and fertility
You should not take Valcyte if you are pregnant unless your doctor recommends it.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant you must tell your doctor. Taking medicine while you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby.
Do not take Valcyte if you are breast-feeding. If your doctor wants you to start drug therapy, you must stop breastfeeding before you start having to take your medication.
Driving and using machines
Do not drive or use any tool or machine if you feel dizzy, tired, shaky, or confused while taking this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
Drug interactions Valcyte and other drugs
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or may take any other medications, including medications obtained without a prescription.
If you take other medications at the same time as taking Valcyte the combination can affect the amount of drugs that get into your blood stream or may cause harmful effects. Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that contain any of the following:
Imipenem-cilastatin (an antibiotic) taken with Valcyte may cause seizures (fits)
zidovudine, didanosine, lamivudine, tenofovir , abacavir, emtricitabine or similar drugs used to treat AIDS
ribavirin, pegylated interferon, adefovir and entecavir used to treat hepatitis B / C
probenecid (a drug against gout).
Taking probenecid and Valcyte at the same time can increase the amount of ganciclovir in your blood.
mycophenolate mofetil (use after inoculation)
vincristine, vinblastine, adriamycin, hydoxyurea or similar types of drugs to treat cancer
Use cidofovir or foscarnet against viral infection
trimethoprim, trimethoprim / sulpha combined and dapsone (antibiotic)
pentamidine (medicine to treat parasites or lung infections)
flucytosine or amphotericin B (anti-fungal agent)

Drug interactions Valcyte with food
The drug Valcyte should be taken with food. If you cannot eat for any reason, you should still take your usual dose.
Side effects of the drug Valcyte 450mg
Like all medicines, Valcyte can cause side effects, and not everyone will.
Allergic reaction
1 in 100 people may have a sudden and severe allergic reaction to valganciclovir (anaphylactic shock). STOP taking Valcyte and go to the nearest hospital if you experience any of the following:
Skin rash, itchy rashes (hives)
Sudden swelling of the throat, face, lips, and mouth can cause difficulty swallowing or breathing
Sudden swelling of your hands, feet or ankles.

Very common side effects (> 1 in 10 people)
Effects on the blood: a decrease in the number of white blood cells in the blood (leukopenia) - which will make you more likely to get an infection, reducing the pigmentation in the blood that carries oxygen (anemia) - can cause fatigue fatigue and shortness of breath when you exercise

Other side effects in children and teenagers
The side effects reported in children and adolescents are similar to those reported for adults.

infections: oral yeast infection (oral candidiasis), infection caused by bacteria or virus in the blood, cellulitis, inflammation or infection of the kidney or bladder
Effects in the liver: increase in certain liver enzymes, which will only be seen in blood tests
Effects in the kidneys: changes to the normal working of the kidneys
Effects on eating: not eating well, losing weight
General effects: fatigue, fever, pain, chest pain, weakness, feeling unwell

Keep out of reach of children.
