The use of the drug  Viread

  • Tenofovir is used with other HIV drugs to help control HIV infection. It helps reduce the amount of HIV in the body so that your immune system can work better. This reduces your chances of getting HIV complications like: new infections, cancer, and improves your quality of life.
  • Tenofovir belongs to a class of drugs called nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV infection
  • Tenofovir is also used to treat a certain type of liver infection called chronic hepatitis B infection. It helps reduce the amount of hepatitis B virus in your body by interfering with the growth of the virus.

How the drug Viread works

In the treatment of hepatitis B virus (CHB) infection

  • Viread works by interfering with the normal functioning of the enzymes (HBV DNA polymerase) that are needed for HBV to reproduce on its own.
  • You can help reduce the amount of hepatitis B virus in your body by reducing the ability of the virus to multiply and infect new liver cells and possibly improve inflammation and scar tissue caused by the hepatitis B virus in the liver. Reducing the amount of virus in your body can reduce your risk of developing cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer.
  • For how long is unknown medicine that can help treat your hepatitis. Sometimes viruses change in your body and drugs no longer work. This is called drug resistance.

In the treatment of HIV infection

  • HIV infection destroys CD4 (T) cells, which are important for the immune system. After a large number of T-cells are destroyed, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) develops.
  • It helps stop the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, an enzyme your body needs for HIV-1 to multiply. Drugs that lower the amount of HIV 1 in the blood are called viral load and may help increase the number of T cells (CD4). Reducing the amount of HIV-1 in the blood reduces the risk of death or infection that occurs when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infection).
