What is Rilutek 50mg Riluzole?
Rilutek contains the active ingredient Riluzole, which is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Active ingredients help slow the progression of this disease and prolong survival. However, the drug is not a definitive cure for ALS, nor does it reverse nerve damage or muscle weakness.
How does Riluzole work?
Although the pathogenesis of ALS has not been fully elucidated, it is suggested that glutamate (the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system) plays a role in cell death in this disease.
The active ingredient riluzole is suggested to work by inhibiting glutamate processing. The mode of operation is not clear.
What does Rilutek do?
- It is indicated to prolong life or time to mechanical ventilation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
- The drug stops the release of Glutamate and this can help prevent nerve cells from being damaged.
Who should not take the drug?
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance Riluzole or any of the excipients of Rilutek 50mg.
- Liver disease or transaminase baseline greater than 3 times the upper limit of normal.
- Patient is pregnant or lactating.
Dosage and how to use Rilutek?
- The recommended dose is 50mg orally twice a day . Rilutek should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
- The medicine should be taken by mouth, every 12 hours at the same time of day every day (eg morning and evening).
- Do not increase your dose or take this medicine more often or for longer than prescribed because your risk of side effects will increase.
