What is Avodart?
The drug Avodart blocks the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone ( DHT ) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The drug is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate gland. Dutasteride helps to improve urine flow and may also reduce your need for prostate surgery later on.
It is sometimes taken with another medicine called tamsulosin (Flomax). Be sure to read the medication guides or patient instructions provided with each of your medications.
Indications for drug treatment
Treatment and prevention of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).
Reduced risk of acute urinary retention (AUR) as well as reduced need for surgery related to BPH.
Contraindications to the use of drugs
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient dutasteride, other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, soybeans, peanuts or to the medicinal ingredient.
Women, children and teenagers.
Dosage & administration of Avodart 0.5mg
Dosage: The drug is used only in adults one tablet a day. Treatment is required for at least 6 months although an early response is possible.
How to use:
The drug can be taken before or after eating.
Do not chew, crush or open Avodart capsules, the capsule should be swallowed whole. The medicine can irritate your lips, mouth, or throat if the capsule breaks or opens before you swallow it.
If you accidentally come into contact with this medicine from a damaged capsule, wash the area with soap and water immediately.
What to do in case of overdose?
Call 911 or go to the nearest local Medical Station right away.
Of course, you need to keep a record and bring a list of all the medications you have taken, including prescription and over-the-counter medications.
What to do if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as possible.
But if it is almost like the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the time as planned.
Do not take double the prescribed dose.

Notes on taking Avodart
Before taking, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to dutasteride, or to a similar medicine called Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar). Using drugs can increase your risk of developing prostate cancer.
For pregnant & lactating women
If a pregnant woman accidentally gets the drug into her body when swallowed or touched, the baby may be born with a deformity of her genitals.
If a woman becomes pregnant or plans to become pregnant and accidentally comes into contact with the last Avodart capsule, she should wash the area with soap and water immediately.
Health status
Prostate cancer patients: The drug can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
The drug reduces the concentration of PSA in the blood. If there is an increase in your PSA, your doctor may decide to do more tests to check if you have prostate cancer.
Do not donate blood while you are taking it and for at least 6 months after your treatment has ended. Avodart can be transfused in the bloodstream and can cause birth defects if a pregnant woman receives a blood transfusion containing dutasteride.
Before taking the drug Avodart
Using the drug Avodart may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Your doctor will perform tests to make sure you do not have other conditions that will prevent you from using it safely.
Before taking it tell your doctor if you have ever been allergic to dutasteride, or to a similar medicine called finasteride (Propecia, Proscar).
People with liver disease or other medical problems.
The drug is not used in women. Pregnant women should not touch the tablet. The drug can harm a baby in the womb.
Patients should not donate blood while taking or for six months after they have stopped taking the drug.
Possible side effects when taking Avodart
Common unwanted effects:
Erectile dysfunction (ED);
Reduced libido;
Reducing the amount of fluid during ejaculation;
Decreased sperm count;
Breast tissue changes.
Serious side effects:
Allergic reactions to the drug, including: hives and other serious skin reactions;
Prostate cancers are fast-growing and potentially fatal;
Birth defects in a male fetus;
This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Please notify your doctor if you experience any of these side effects.
Drug interactions are different from medications
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:
conivaptan (Vaprisol);
imatinib (Gleevec);
isoniazid (to treat tuberculosis);
an antibiotic such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (EES, EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole) or telithromycin (Ketek);
an antifungal medicine such as itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), miconazole (Oravig) or voriconazole (Vfend);
an antidepressant such as nefazodone;
medicine to treat heart disease or blood pressure such as nicardipine (Cardene) or quinidine (Quin-G); or
HIV / AIDS medications such as atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), saquinavir (Invirase) or ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra).
This list is not complete and other drugs may interact with this medication.
Interaction with food
Alcohol can dehydrate you and make it difficult to urinate. If you already have BPH, taking it while taking it may worsen your symptoms. Avoid or limit drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
Grapefruit juice slows down the rate and can cause dangerously high levels of the drug Avodart in the blood. Avoid eating grapefruit or any juice while using it.
Drug storage
You should store the drug at room temperature, dry, avoid direct sunlight exposure.
You should not store the medicine in the refrigerator.
Keep medicine out of reach of children.
You do not throw medications in the toilet or plumbing pipes.
