What is Megace?

Megace 160mg is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of loss of appetite and wasting syndrome in patients with AIDS -Related cachexia , breast cancer or endometrial cancer . Megace can be used alone or with other medicines.

Uses of Megace

Megestrol is used to relieve symptoms and reduce suffering from advanced breast cancer and advanced endometrial cancer (cancer that begins in the lining of the uterus).

Megestrol is used to treat anorexia, malnutrition, and severe weight loss in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Megestrol should not be used to prevent anorexia and severe weight loss in patients who have not developed this condition.

Megestrol is a man-made version of the human hormone progesterone. The drug treats breast cancer and endometrial cancer by affecting female hormones involved in cancer growth. It increases weight by increasing appetite.

How does Megacet work?

Megestrol is a type of hormone therapy. Hormones are chemicals produced by glands in the body that enter the bloodstream and cause effects on other tissues. (For example, the hormone testosterone made in the testicles is responsible for male characteristics such as a deeper voice and increased body hair.)

The use of hormone therapy to treat cancer is based on the observation that receptors for specific hormones required for cell growth are located on the surface of some tumor cells. Hormone therapies work by; stop producing a certain hormone, block hormone receptors, or substitute chemical analogues for the active hormone that tumor cells cannot use.

Megestrol is a progestin (a man-made form of the hormone progesterone). It has properties that interfere with the normal estrogen cycle. This interferes with the stimulation of cell growth in estrogen-dependent tumor cells. It is also thought to have some direct effect on the lining of the uterine wall (endometrium).

One side effect of megestrol is weight gain. The exact mechanism of this effect is still unclear, but the effect leads to increased body fat. Taking advantage of this side effect, megestrol has been studied and used to treat severe anorexia (anorexia), muscle weakness (weakness), and weight loss associated with cancer and AIDS.

How much is the dose of Megace?

Megace is recommended to be used according to the doctor's prescription, do not arbitrarily determine the therapeutic dose without a diagnosis.

The recommended dose of the drug is 160mg/day, requiring a minimum of 2 months of treatment to determine the therapeutic effect of the drug. Because the time of effect showing hormonal changes is usually quite long.
