What is Eliquis 5mg ?

Eliquis (apixaban) blocks the action of clotting substances found in the blood. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot in people with a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation.

It is also used after hip or knee replacement surgery to prevent blood clots called deep vein thrombosis ( DVT ), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs.

How does Apixaban work?

Active ingredient apixaban is a potent, direct reversible and highly selective inhibitor of factor Xa. It does not require antithrombin III for antithrombotic activity. The active substance inhibits the activity of free factor Xa and its binding to blood clots and prothrombinase.

The active substance has no direct effect on platelet aggregation, but indirectly inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. By inhibiting factor Xa, the active substance prevents thrombin generation and the development of thrombus.

Preclinical studies of apixaban in animal models have demonstrated antithrombotic efficacy in the prevention of arterial and venous thrombosis at doses that maintain hemostasis.
